Open call for Foreign Universities

The call for applications for Spanish summer courses 2025 from the Campus Valle de la Lengua is now open. These scholarships are aimed at students and teachers from foreign universities who wish to learn Spanish or improve their knowledge of the language.

This summer Spanish language programme of the University of La Rioja includes four intensive courses to be taught in June and July 2025 and aims to encourage stays of the international university community in the teaching/learning of Spanish as a foreign language and to strengthen collaboration with foreign universities.

Course types to choose from

The Spanish language summer programme is made up of four intensive courses that will take place between June and July 2025 as follows:

Curso de español de verano: Lengua y cultura españolas (Summer Spanish course: Spanish language and culture)

From 30 June to 25 July 2025: Linguistic and cultural immersion course for students who wish to begin or improve their Spanish.

Curso de español de verano: Literatura y cultura españolas

From 30 June to 25 July 2025: aimed at university lecturers, final year students (or those with a high level of Spanish), doctoral and master's degree students interested in this subject. Minimum recommended level of Spanish: B2

Cultura y Lengua Españolas: Fundamentos histórico-artísticos, lingüísticos y cinematográficos

From 7 to 14 July 2025 (on-site session from 7 to 11 July): Intensive course (BIP format, Blended Intensive Programme) aimed at students with a Minimum recommended level of Spanish: B2, doctoral students, master's students or teaching staff, focusing on advanced cultural and linguistic content.

Claves para la enseñanza de ELE (Español como Lengua Extranjera): Fundamentos teórico-prácticos para desarrollar la competencia comunicativa

From 30 June to 4 July 2025: A teacher training course aimed at future Spanish language teachers, final-year undergraduate students and Master’s students interested in Spanish as a foreign language teaching, doctoral candidates, and non-university level teachers with an interest in this field of applied linguistics.                                     
A minimum recommended language proficiency level of C1 is required for non-Spanish-speaking participants.

Grant characteristics

These grants are intended for foreign universities, which will be responsible for selecting the final beneficiaries—either students or teaching staff. Each university may submit a maximum of 2 applications (one per course and per person -2 people will not be accepted in the same course-).

These scholarships cover:

  • Tuition fees of the preferred Spanish language summer course.
  • Accommodation without meals for the duration of the selected course.
    • The maximum scholarship amount for accommodation will be used exclusively for this and cannot be used for other expenses, neither by the home university nor the University of La Rioja.
    • The University of La Rioja will look for appropriate accommodation for the participants, depending on availability.

Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis. This means that various scoring criteria will be evaluated to publish a list of candidate universities. Then, if your university has been selected, we will contact your candidate to manage their grant. The total program budget is 25,000 euros. The final number of scholarships will depend on the participating universities and the selected courses.

These scholarships cover:

  • Tuition fees of the preferred Spanish Language and Culture course.
  • Accommodation during the period of the chosen course.
    • The maximum amount of aid for accommodation will be used exclusively for this accommodation and cannot be used for other expenses, neither by the home university nor the University of La Rioja.
    • The University of La Rioja will look for appropriate accommodation for students, depending on availability.

Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis. This means that various scoring criteria will be evaluated to publish a list of candidate universities. Then, if your university has been selected, we will contact your candidate to manage their grant. The total program budget is 54,736 euros. The final number of scholarships will depend on the participating universities and the selected courses.

Requirements and eligibility

Requirements for Universities:

  • Have a department related to Spanish language, history, culture, or Hispanic studies.
  • Carry out an internal selection process to choose its candidate(s), ensuring transparency, equality, and objectivity.
  • Have not been awarded grants during the 2024–2025 academic year for similar Spanish study programmes (approved by Resolutions No. 728 of 11 July 2024 and No. 1,332 of 15 October 2024, issued by the Rector of the University of La Rioja).

Beneficiaries:

  • Therefore, the beneficiaries of these grants will be foreign universities that meet the aforementioned requirements, although it will be the Student or students designated by the home university who will receive the scholarship.

Note:

  • This grant is not compatible with Erasmus+ funding for the BIP course (Spanish Culture and Language: Historical-Artistic, Linguistic and Cinematographic Foundations) in case that specific funds have already been granted for that programme.

Assessment criteria for candidate universities

The score obtained by each university will be assessed considering the following criteria:

  • Having a signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) or any other collaboration agreement with the University of La Rioja to promote student and staff Mobility or teacher training in the field of Spanish as a Foreign Language  (up to 25 points).
  • Total number of participants from the foreign university enrolled in courses at the University of La Rioja during the 21/22, 22/23, and 23/24 (up to 25 points):
    • Participants in Spanish language and culture courses:
      • 1 to 15 participants: 10 points
      • 16 to 25 participants: 15 points
      • 26 to 50 participants: 25 points
    • Participants in Spanish as a foreing Language courses or BIP Erasmus+ programmes related to Spanish teaching or Hispanic culture:
      • 1 to 15 participants: 10 points
      • 16 to 30 participants: 15 points
      • 31 to 50 participants: 25 points
    • Motivation letter, evaluated according to the following criteria (up to 50 points):
      • Number of Spanish language students at the applicant applicant university
      • Number of students from the applicant university who study annually in Spain.
    • Spanish language training programme taught at the applicant foreign university.
    • Number of teachers, future teachers, or academic staff from the applicant university who have taken part in Spanish as a foreign Language (SFL) training programmes or in Hispanic culture programmes, including Erasmus+ BIP courses.
    • Grounds or reason for the interest of the applicant foreign university in establishing collaboration with the University of La Rioja.

Application process

  • The home university will carry out the selection process and nominate up to two students, each for a different course in the program, as previously indicated.
  • The potential home universities must apply by filling in the following online form (in Spanish or English): https://forms.office.com/e/JkNSp9G0WY
  • Applicants must upload the following documents (in Spanish or English):
    • Annex I – Application Form: Addressed to the Director of the Valle de la Lengua Project. It must be signed by the Rector or a representative from the applicant university.
    • Annex II – Legal Representation (if applicable): Letter or certificate proving representation of the applicant university, in case Annex I is not signed by the Rector.
    • Annex III – Commitment to Participation: A statement signed by both the selected participant and the applicant university confirming their commitment to attend the course on behalf of the university.
    • Passport or National ID Document
    • Certificate of Selection: Document confirming that the selected candidate has been officially designated by their university following the internal selection process.
    • Academic or Professional Affiliation Certificate:
      • For students: A document proving enrollment for the current academic year.
      • For faculty or PhD candidates: A document verifying institutional affiliation (teaching certificate, letter of affiliation, contract, or equivalent document).

Deadline

Applications must be submitted until May 23, 2025, 23:59 CET (UTC+2). Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.

About the Valle de la Lengua Project

Valle de la Lengua Project is one of the priority lines of action of the Valle de la Lengua strategic project. This project has been promoted by the Government of La Rioja to take advantage of Spanish as a tool for development. It includes actions in different areas, including learning and teaching.

In this area, the University of La Rioja plays a key role as a strategic partner for the development of differential and innovative training and conference activities about Spanish Language and Culture.
