Some notes on the implications for the
history of English of the loss of the formal subjunctive
Sintaxis / Sintax
This paper deals with the implications that the loss
of the forms of the subjunctive mood has had in the
history of the English language. We will discuss how
the gap left by this loss has been filled, that is,
the mechanisms the language produced to solve the problem.
We will start by defining the concept of subjunctive,
then we will look at its presence in the first stages
of the English language (i.e. Old English), how it was
conveyed during the Middle and Early Modern period,
and how it is expressed in Present-Day English.
