RESEARCH PROJECTS

Musicology applied to classical concert in Spain (XVIII-XXI centuries). Historical, productive, interpretative and ideological aspects (2015-2017).

Reference no.: I + D project HAR2014-53143-P. Awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, and headquartered at the University of La Rioja.

  • This project focuses on the classical concert in Spain since its early stages (late eighteenth century) to the present. Despite the change of historiographical approach that musicology experienced by the late twentieth century (which meant a broader view that considered music in its social and cultural dimensions), discourse focused on the composer (his career, his social relations and the influence of his music) continued to be prevalent. Against this background, performance studies have recently highlighted the glaring absenceof the interpretative aspects of the work in music history. From this point of view the work is conceived not as an immutable text but as a sketch that the performer and the listener complete through, respectively, the interpretation and reception processes. In this context, the concert becomes a central event where music history takes place, as it is only there that the musical work becomes truly realized.
Moreover, the concert has implications in areas such as leisure, socialization, political and economic strategies or tourism. This project aims to overcome the scarce critical attention that the concert has received from the international musicology, approaching it from its historical, productive, performative and ideological dimensions. It means putting(applied)musicology  at theservice of one of the most prominent cultural and economical resources in the European Society.

Reference no.: I+D HAR2011-22712. Awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, and based in the University of La Rioja.

The subject of this project is chamber music both as social and musical practice. Performance issues related to this repertoires will also be considered [Read more].

Reference no.: I+D HAR2008-00636. Awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, and based in the University of La Rioja.

  • This project focuses on aspects that have been traditionally left apart in studies about 18th-century Madrid and that may allow for its comparison with other European cities: audience profiles, instrumental genres (symphony, sonata, quartet), commercial networks, music-making spaces and the reception of classic music, symbolised by J. Haydn’ s output. [Read more].
