RESEARCH PROJECTS

Chamber music in 18th-century Spain: genres, performance, recovery

Only in relatively recent times, musicology –with the usual delay comparing with tendencies within history and art history– has begun to take into account the importance of private music-making as an essencial space for music history. From the beginning of musicological research in Spain at the end of the 19th-century, the main focus of study has been centred on public institutions, such as cathedrals and theatres. This perspective was due to, on the one hand, the presence of extensive archival records generated by the institutions themselves as part of its administration and memory. And, on the other hand, to the belief that this public centres enjoyed a predominant social dimension that in turn made them the main ingredient of history of music.

Contrary to the centrality of public institutions and its associated repertories in Spanish research on the 18th century, this project aims at focusing on private spaces and its related musical genres. That is to say, it focuses on chamber music. This type of music will be studied as a social and musical practice derived from the 18th-century structural transformations of the consumption and production of music. By turning the attention to forgoten repertories, if not marginalised, our view of this period not only will be enriched. It will also be shown that, as opposed to the inhereted image, chamber music was intensively cultivated in 18th-century Spain as nearly as much as in other European countries, including genres that were thought to be non-existent here (as the string quartet). Furthermore, this study of chamber music in Spain within its spatial contexts will be enhanced with investigation into an innovative research field related to the performance of these genres. A performance history that, in the context of this project, will be considered as a live practice with its own tradition, from its premiered to the present. A tradition that must be taking into account for the full understanding of this music.
