RESEARCH GROUP "MUSIC IN SPAIN: COMPOSITION, RECEPTION AND INTERPRETATION"

¡NEW! DEFINITIVE PROGRAM FOR INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE: “The Concert in Spain (18th-21st centuries): Historical, Productive, Performative and Ideological Aspects”

The research group "Music in Spain: Composition, Reception and Interpretation" (MECRI) resides at the University of La Rioja and consists of eighteen researchers from different generations linked to Spanish and foreign institutions. His field of research is preferred musical activity––composition, reception and interpretation––in Spain since the eighteenth century to the present.

The different lines of research developed by the group share two basic premises: (1) the conviction that the history of music in Spain can not be understood without considering the relationships of diverse nature existing between Spain and the other European countries and (2) intends to integrate musicology in today's society, applying the results of historical research to concrete actions such as retrieving forgotten repertoires or the development of strategic plans for festivals and concert halls.

The research team is conducting currently focus on four areas or lines of complementary study:

1. The cultivation of musical practice in areas of nature and varied settings, from private chamber music to the public concert. Historically, a substantial part of the cultural, social and political elite have participated in these events, which today remains a symbol of cultural and economic progress.

2. The history of musical performance, with particular attention to the repertoire composed in Spain and the challenges musicians and the current public face for recovery, execution and understanding of this music.

3. The origin, development and future perspectives of the public concert and its programs in Spain, taking into account production, economic, social, cultural and ideological aspects.

4. More broadly, history and musical analysis of the market, especially in urban settings such as Madrid and Barcelona, paying attention to concert promoters (private patrons and institutions), the score editing, building instruments and the music press.

It therefore applied to the Spanish case study perspectives respectively defined by the social history of music, recent "performance studies" and applied musicology.

To achieve these objectives, MECRI promotes five main actions:
1. Publication of research carried out in different languages and formats (articles, monographs and collective books), including a collection of scores.
2. Development of I & D projects.
3. Organisation of seminars and conferences.
4. Participation in national and international scientific meetings.
5. Promotion of research in the form of supervised doctoral theses.
