RESEARCH PROJECTS

Public, city, style: musical life in Madrid during the Enlightenment (1759-1808)

Even though Madrid was probably the most important city in Spain during the Enlightenment, views of its musical life have mainly focused on the institutions and activities associated with, or promoted by, the Court and the Town Council. This tendency has prevented scholars from evaluating the impact of transformations detected in an European context —that musicology has associated with the rise of musical and cultural modernity— in Madrid: the establishment of the general public as an audience; the consolidation of certain genres that would play a central role in music history (such as the symphony, the keyboard sonata and, above all, the string quartet); the creation of commercial networks of music printing and distribution; the reception of forms and
stylistic traits typical of musical Classicism in music (embodied in the figure of Joseph Haydn, perhaps the most-often performed foreign composer of instrumental music in Madrid); and the coexistence of music-making venues from the Ancient Regime (such as private academies promoted by nobility as a means of social exclusion and prestige) and other emergent musical events (such as public concerts managed by incipient impresarios out to make a profit).

The objective of this research project is to study these aspects, traditionally marginalised in conventional studies, allowing the process of transformation and modernisation in Madrid, as examined in other European cities, to be traced. Such a perspective is based on the assumption that, like their European counterparts, listeners, musicians and composers active in Madrid had a much broader musical background than has traditionally been believed until now. This approach will not only provide a richer and more varied view of the intense Madrilenean musical life, but more importantly, it will allow its results to form part of the debates and issues discussed by other European musicological traditions that have been dealing with similar question for some time.
