On the letters pages – and sometimes in articles adjacent to the facsimiles – it is possible to see the cultural and political preoccupations of the post-war years as The Listener presented them. This was the liberal consensus of the time, which will often appear conservative in today’s cultural climate. Lewis was on the ‘left’ of the cultural scene, just as he had been in his revolutionary years before the First World War.
