La Rioja
If you are still hesitating between participating
in our conference and not it is because you still do
not know La Rioja: what are you waiting for?
In order to persuade you, we will not fall into clichés
like our good wine, our excellent gastronomy, or the
kindness and naturalness of our people -though we could
do it, certainly-.
We want you to take the opportunity to spend three
days working among colleagues, but also to enjoy the
region where the Spanish language and Quintiliano were
born, and to visit the land where the great poet Gonzalo
de Berceo wrote his lines.
The Spanish language constitutes an essential part
of our culture: a proof of this are the linguistic studies
carried out in our University, together with the national
and international projects promoted by the Foundation
of "San Millán de la Cogolla". Very
soon this International Centre for the Research of the
Spanish Language (Centro Internacional de Investigación
de la Lengua Española) will become the indispensable
point of reference for the study, dissemination and
conservation" of this common inheritance that units
and identifies so many Spanish-speaking citizens who
are spread all over the world.

LOGROÑO
Our city has all the services of big cities, but the
closeness, both physical and personal, of small urban
places. This grants it with an additional attractiveness,
which is quickly grasped by the visitor.
Placed in the right margin of the Ebro river, it was
born due to the pilgrim's road to Santiago de Compostela.
Thus, if we come into the city crossing the Stone Bridge
(Puente de Piedra) we can enjoy its history by wandering
through its oldest district, to end up in the center
of the town.
We cannot miss the scroll through Portales street -which
was so magnificently immortalized in Bardem's film "Calle
Mayor" (1963)-. Another must is Laurel Street,
were one can have good wine and excellent tapas. Finally,
do not leave Logroño without droping to see Espartero's
statue, situated in the central plaza of Espolón.
And, just as an anecdote, note that the sign of identity
of our city Hall is the tilde of the ñ character;
very fresh and, above all, very linguistic, isn't it?

UNIVERSITY OF LA RIOJA
Young, as our association, the UR has linguistics in
its veins: if we look at the emblem of the institution,
we can see that it is made up of two characters belonging
to the 46th code of San Millán de la Cogolla
-called "emilianense"-; to them, we have to
add the representation of pilgrim's road to Santiago
and of the Oja river -to which we owe the name of our
community: Rio-Oja-.
The conference will be held, as can be expected, in
the Phylology Building. The papers will be presented
in the following rooms:
· Multiple usages room
· Assembly Hall
· Lecture room
· Seminar room
· Languages laboratory
· Other teaching classrooms
Besides, conference speakers and attendants will be
allowed to use the two computer rooms available, were
there is internet access and printing press service
available.
